Written by Dermal Clinician Amy — ANO Cosmetics & Skin
Hi, I’m Amy, Dermal Clinician at ANO Cosmetics & Skin.

Pigmentation is something I see almost every day in clinic, and it’s one of the most common concerns clients ask me about.
I often explain to clients that pigmentation isn’t just one single issue, it’s a spectrum of conditions where the skin produces too much melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its colour.
For some, pigmentation appears as freckles or sunspots from years of UV exposure. For others, it’s post-acne marks or hormonal pigmentation that darkens during pregnancy or from contraceptive use.
At ANO, I love helping clients understand why their pigmentation is happening, because when we know the cause, we can choose the right treatment path.
Pigmentation takes time to develop, often sitting in different layers of the skin, which is why a “quick fix” rarely works. My focus is always on education, prevention, and long-term skin health, not just treating what we see on the surface.
Let’s talk about what pigmentation really is, what causes it, and how we can treat it, both in clinic and at home.
What Is Pigmentation?
Pigmentation refers to the uneven production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour.
It can appear as dark patches, sun damage, freckles, melasma, or post-inflammatory marks (from breakouts or trauma).
Common causes include UV exposure, heat, hormonal changes, inflammation, and even certain medications.
At ANO, we take a holistic, clinical approach, assessing not only the visible pigment but also the deeper triggers within the skin.
In-Clinic Treatments
When it comes to treating pigmentation, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. That’s why we always begin with a Comprehensive Skin Consultation ($50, redeemable towards treatment or skincare). During your consultation, we assess pigment depth, skin health, and lifestyle factors to build a customised treatment plan.
At ANO, we’re proud to use some of the most advanced laser technology available — and we’re the only clinic in Shepparton with both the Cutera Excel V+ and Pico Enlighten systems.
Cutera Excel V+
The Excel V+ is a dual-wavelength laser that specifically targets vascular and pigment concerns caused by sun damage, age spots, redness, and broken capillaries.
It works by delivering controlled pulses of light energy that break down unwanted pigment and vascular lesions without damaging surrounding tissue.
It’s perfect for those with sun-induced pigmentation or surface redness.

Treatments from $320 per session or $890 for a 3-treatment Package.
Pico Enlighten Laser
The Pico Enlighten is a cutting-edge laser that uses picosecond technology, ultra-short energy pulses that shatter pigment particles into microscopic fragments. The body then naturally clears these through the lymphatic system.
It’s ideal for treating deeper, stubborn pigmentation such as melasma, sun damage, or uneven skin tone, and can be used safely on most skin types.
Under the Pico Enlighten platform, we offer two treatment types:
Pico Genesis — a brightening and revitalising laser treatment that targets pigment and boosts collagen, improving tone and clarity.

Sessions from $550 or 3-treatment packages from $1,500.
Pico Genesis for Malaysia – Sessions from $550 or 6-treatment packages from $2,400.
Pico FX — a full-face rejuvenation treatment designed to remodel the skin, stimulate collagen, reduces fine lines, and reduces textural irregularities for smoother, more radiant skin.

Sessions from $650 or 3-treatment packages from $1,800.
All laser treatments are performed by our Registered Nurses and Dermal Clinicians, ensuring you receive the highest standard of safety and care with every session.
Skin Checks and Clinical Safety at ANO

Because pigmentation can appear in so many forms, part of our holistic approach includes recognising when a pigment spot may need a medical review.
At ANO, we’re fortunate to have Nurse Maigan, who specialises in skin checks and mole assessments. Maigan works from our clinic every Monday, offering:
- Single Mole Check – $90
- Up to 4 Mole Checks – $140
- Full Body Skin Check – $200
This service allows us to ensure that any unusual or suspicious pigmentation is identified early. If a spot doesn’t appear to be a cosmetic concern, Maigan can perform a professional assessment and guide you on next steps.
Our service offerings for cosmetics and skincare means your skin is always viewed holistically, not just for aesthetic improvement, but also for your health and safety.
At Home Support
Professional treatments are only part of the journey, and the best results always come when clients commit to home care between sessions.
To support and maintain your in-clinic results, I often recommend incorporating DMK skincare into your routine. These formulas work with the skin’s natural functions to help prevent pigment from reforming.

DMK Super Bright — $157
This brightening cream is one of my go-tos for uneven tone. It contains botanical extracts that help regulate melanin production while hydrating and protecting the skin barrier.
It’s lightweight, suitable for all skin types, and leaves the complexion looking balanced and refined.
Use morning and/or evening before your moisturiser.

DMK Melanotech Drop — $163
This potent serum is designed to target stubborn or hormonally driven pigmentation. It strengthens the skin, reduces inflammatory responses, and helps regulate melanin activity from within.
Use morning and evening before moisturiser.
My Advice as a Dermal Clinician

Consistency and protection are key when treating pigmentation.
Results don’t happen overnight but with the right combination of clinical treatments, medical-grade skincare, and daily sun protection, the improvement can be truly transformative.
I always remind my clients that SPF 50+ is non-negotiable. Without consistent sun protection, pigmentation can resurface quickly, even after successful laser or skincare treatment.
At ANO, we recommend and stock the Airyday SPF 50+ range, one of my personal favourites for daily wear. These sunscreens feel more like skincare than sunscreen, offering broad-spectrum protection while keeping the skin hydrated, smooth, and luminous. They’re lightweight, non-greasy, and sit beautifully under makeup or on bare skin.
For the Face — $51 (75ml)
We carry several Airyday face SPFs to suit different skin types and preferences, including:
- Clear as Day SPF50+ Dreamscreen – A weightless, invisible gel that melts into skin to deliver deep hydration and a dewy satin finish. Ideal for dry or dehydrated skin types.
Loaded with Hyaluronic Acid, Blue Light Protection, and Vitamins C, E & F for antioxidant support.
Scented with hypoallergenic fresh watermelon. - Golden Glow SPF50+ Dreamscreen – Adds a subtle golden tint for a sun-kissed finish, ideal for those wanting a natural, radiant glow without makeup.
- Pretty in Zinc SPF50+ Dreamscreen – A lightweight, mineral-based formula that helps soothe sensitive or breakout-prone skin while offering a soft, satin finish.
- Bronze Glow SPF50+ Dreamscreen – A warm, luminous bronze tint that enhances the complexion with a healthy, golden tone — perfect for medium to deeper skin tones.
- Pearl Glow SPF50+ Dreamscreen – A luminous, pearlescent finish that brightens and illuminates the skin for a soft, radiant glow.
Each formula is TGA-listed, provides UVA/UVB and blue-light protection, and is designed to feel effortless and comfortable on the skin.
For the Body — Tough Luxe SPF50+ Dreamscreen — $53 (275ml)
An all-in-one SPF for face, hands, and body that’s completely weightless yet powerfully protective.
With 4-hour water and sweat resistance, it melts into the skin like a moisturiser while delivering lasting hydration through Hyaluronic Acid, Shea Butter, and Antioxidants.
It leaves the skin fresh and supple, never sticky with a light Cucumber & Green Tea scent.
I recommend reapplying sunscreen every few hours when outdoors and making SPF a non-negotiable part of your morning routine. It’s one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to prevent pigmentation from returning and to maintain your results long-term.
A bright, even complexion takes time but with the right support, consistent care, and professional guidance, it’s absolutely achievable.
