You’ve swapped your cleanser. Then your moisturiser. Then the serum you were sure was the problem. And your skin still looks the way it looks — dull, reactive, breaking out in the same three spots it always does when things get busy.
Here’s what we see in the treatment room, over and over. It’s rarely the product. It’s the six weeks that came before the appointment.
It’s Not The Cleanser
It isn’t the wrong moisturiser. It isn’t the wrong serum. And it certainly isn’t a lack of trying — most of the women who sit in our chairs have tried more, and spent more, than they’d like to admit.
What we ask instead is simple: how have the last six weeks actually been? Work deadline. Exam block for the kids. A parent unwell. A wedding to plan. Not enough sleep, more coffee to cover it, dinner eaten standing up. Nine times out of ten, that’s the answer — not the ingredient list.
What Stress Actually Does To Skin
Skin is an organ, not an accessory. It responds to what’s happening inside the body the same way it responds to what’s applied on top of it.
Sustained stress raises cortisol. Cortisol increases oil production, which is why stress-related breakouts tend to cluster along the jaw and chin. It also slows skin’s ability to repair itself overnight, which is why the dullness and fine dehydration lines show up hardest right when you need to look and feel most put together. Add poor sleep and irregular eating — both common when life is full — and the skin barrier weakens further, becoming more reactive to products it has tolerated for years.
None of this is in your head. And none of it means you’re doing skincare wrong.
Why Swapping Products Doesn’t Fix It
This is where most people lose money without meaning to. A stressed, barrier-compromised complexion doesn’t need a new product. It needs less interference and more support — and those are very different things to buy.
Introduce a new active on top of an already-irritated barrier and you can make the reaction worse, not better. Then the new product gets blamed, gets replaced, and the cycle starts again. We’d rather you be disappointed and want more from a consultation than sold another bottle that was never going to be the answer.
What We’d Actually Look At
A proper skin consultation isn’t a product recommendation dressed up as advice. It’s an assessment — barrier function, hydration, oil activity, and what your skin is currently able to tolerate versus what it needs. Sometimes that means simplifying a routine right down before adding anything back in. Sometimes it means a professional treatment that supports repair faster than home care alone ever could. And sometimes, honestly, the most useful thing we can tell you is that your skin is doing exactly what stressed skin does, and to give it time.
We assess before we treat. Every time, no exceptions — because a routine built for calm skin will never work on skin that’s under pressure, no matter how good the products are.
If the stress itself is the heavier load — not just the skin it’s showing up on — that’s worth talking to someone about too. We can help with what’s on the surface. We’re not the whole answer, and we won’t pretend to be.
So before you buy the next thing: what has the last six weeks actually looked like?
